An Animals’ Angels team checked the condition of approximately 600 bovines and monitored the loading of the animals into the trucks. The Animals’ Angels farrier corrected the hoof problems of seven cows. It was agreed with the mayor at a meeting in the Town Hall that a small permanent Animals’ Angels station should be constructed on the market premises.

An Animals’ Angels team checked a truck with "breeding" sows from Catalonia. Final destination was Tenerife and the total travelling time exceeded 70 hours. According to EU rules, the maximum permitted travelling time for these animals is 24 hours.

An Animals’ Angels team checked the overall conditions at the market and held constructive talks with the market director and the veterinarian regarding a restructuring of the market and the construction of new buildings.


16.06.2004 | Spain | Port of Cadiz

An Animals’ Angels team checked a transport truck with "laying" hens from Burgos destined for Tenerife. In total, there were 5,430 hens on one truck. They were stacked one upon the other in cages of 1.10 m x 0.55 m, with 30 animals crammed into one cage.

An Animals’ Angels team followed several animal transport vehicles and spoke to the drivers regarding vehicle deficiencies. In the meantime, charges have been filed against some of them.


14.06.2004 | Poland | Market in Bodzentyn

An Animals’ Angels team checked the condition of approximately 500 horses. The Animals’ Angels management bought an old work horse on behalf of an Animals’ Angels donating member. After ten years of hard field work, the horse will now enjoy his retirement in Germany. One hundred and fifty horses were loaded into the long-distance trucks destined for southern Italy.

An Animals’ Angels team checked the condition of approximately 400 bovines as well as the state of the transport vehicles. Members of the Animals’ Angels management (campaign manager and adminstration/PR manager) were there to get a first-hand impression of the work. They also agreed on further measures and improvements. Some of the "slaughter" cows were in very bad condition; two cows were lying on the ground, unable to get to their feet. The Animals’ Angels farrier trimmed the hooves of seven cows.

An Animals’ Angels team checked a transport truck loaded with pigs. The animals originated from northern Spain and were destined for Tenerife. The vehicle itself complied with applicable EU rules, but the animals were in transit for at least 63 hours without being unloading. This was in contrast to the present regulations that allow a maximum transport time of 24 hours for pigs. An Animals’ Angels team checked a truck loaded with horses. The truck had been standing in the port all night and the drunken driver was lying next to his vehicle. With the help of the police, the Animals’ Angels team cared for the horses and the two dogs that were locked in the truck’s cab.

An Animals’ Angels team again visited a sheep facility notorious for poor care and handling of the animals. We have urged the competent veterinary authorities, both orally and in writing, to carry out improvements. But so far without success.


09.06.2004 | Italy | Port of Trieste

An Animals’ Angels team met with the port veterinarian. The stables were clean and there was enough fresh water for the cattle. Further improvements have been promised to be carried out within the next four weeks.
