Animals' Angels inspects animal markets, husbandries and one slaughterhouse in Qatar and attends several meetings with authorities, industry representatives and lawyers.
Animal welfare, especially in regard to ‚farm' animals, is a whole new topic in Qatar. If our team reports a particular case to the authorities, they respond with immediate help. At the moment they investigate a complaint brought up by Animals' Angels against a dairy farm with roughly 2.700 cattle.
There exists a will to introduce improvements for the animals and to eliminate deficiencies, but it becomes more and more apparent that this process will take its time. In Qatar, there is basically no animal welfare legislation so we strongly advocate for a decree. We were informed by the authorities that some standards and guidelines are currently being developed. Besides, together with a young Qatari lawyer, we are planning to introduce an animal welfare programme for public schools.
We will continue our commitment in Qatar, the world’s richest nation, which hopefully will soon grant statutory protection to the animals.
