Animals' Angels is at the European Parliament today where, on its behalf, Dr. A. Rabitsch presents our new report The Myth of Enforcement at a meeting of the Parliament’s Intergroup on the Welfare and Conservation of Animals.

We inform the attendants about the sad but undeniable truth about Council Regulation EC 1/2005 on the protection of animals during transport: it is both unenforced and unenforcable. The regulations‘ legal text is extremely complex and certain problems inherent in animal transport cannot be tackled by simply raising the level of enforcement. Besides, transporters face insuperable difficulties; member states proved to be incapable of enforcing the law; and the EU Commission proved to be not capable of remedying systematic non-compliance. During our short talking time of only ten minutes, we support our statements with many examples from our decades-long experience in the field.

Animals' Angels will insist requesting a new regulation to be adopted, ensuring true protection for the animals. The myth of enforcement must be dropped once and for all!
