The matting also helps prevent the slipping/falling of animals. Soft canes are permitted to move animals but must not be used to hit; the use of electrical shock prodders is not allowed nor is the use of dogs.
The owners are building a new automated weighing, scanning and drafting facility which will eliminate a huge amount of extra handling of animals and thereby reduce stress. Penning densities are acceptable as the animals can freely move and no animals are forced to walk over another.
