16.06.2015 | Visiting Muchea Saleyard

Animals’ Angels visit the saleyard where approx 13.000 sheep are for sale. The vast majority of animals are in good condition and seem quiet/calm. Two sheep are identified and assessed as being lame, as they are unable to bear weight. Both are shot in an efficient and respectful manner.

A buyer tries to load too many sheep he has bought into a trailer which is too small. The management  intervene and the man happily agrees to make two trips.

The yard had previously experimented with troughs to identify which ones are the most suitable. The management express they are happy with the placement of troughs in every pen including sale pens because they are unable to control the time off water of the sheep prior to the arrival.  No saleyard can control the period sheep are denied water and feed prior to arrival, because the farmer starts stops the sheep from access to water and feed on farm, and often they do not provide the appropriate paperwork to show the last time the animals were watered and fed. If the sheep assess water in any pen they are in at the yard then water deprivation isn’t an issue.

We ask that a sign giving phone numbers for animal welfare issues is replaced with a permanent sign. They are ordering a tin one.
