Two weeks have passed since our Moroccan team visited Mers El Kheir market. It is with a great deal of excitement that they return today to check how the animals at the market have fared in the meantime.

They arrive at the market at 8:30 in the morning. First of all, they fill their water cans at the food stand of a man who offers them free water for the animals at any time. Equipped with 25 liters of water, Ali Habib and Boubaker walk around the market to water the donkeys, horses and mules tethered between the markets stalls of their owners. Afterwards, they move on to the ‘parking lot’ where most of the ‘working’ animals have to wait.

During their last two visits, the team met a young boy who lives near the ‘parking lot’. He actively supported our team watering the animals and wanted to keep doing so. Today he is back and tells our team that during the week he and his brother have watered the animals. It is great to hear that the work of Ali, Habib and Boubaker starts to bear fruit and at least led the boy to take action and treat better the animals. Together they feed and water the animals who hardly want to stop drinking at this heat.

Afterwards, our team moves on to the birds being sold at the market’s poultry area. Equipped with feed and water they provide for the chickens, geese and ducks. The birds lie on the ground with their legs tied together in the traditional way. Next week, Ali, Habib and Boubaker want to bring along self-made cages to show the owners a different and more considerate way of holding their animals.
