Cruel breeding practices, animal welfare violations in equestrian sports, ‘livestock farming’: the challenges in animal welfare that young veterinary students face are manifold. With this in mind, we are delighted about a great elective course offered to students at Justus-Liebig-University in Giessen. As part of the lecture series “Discussion Platform Animal Welfare,” important animal welfare issues that future veterinarians will encounter in their daily work are discussed together with external speakers. We were also invited to give a lecture on the topic of “Animal Welfare During Transport.” We are happy that animal welfare is being given a place in veterinary medicine studies through courses such as this. This prepares students for the challenges of everyday professional life and raises their awareness of their great responsibility in animal welfare.
