During the pre-Christmas season, the Eichenlaubschule school in Weiskirchen focuses on the topic of animal welfare for so-called ‘farm’ animals. As every year, we were once again happy to accept the invitation from teacher Carolin Brücker. In a total of six 90-minute workshops, we visit classes ranging from lower secondary level to the graduating class.
Together with the pupils, we discuss the issue of animal transports and take a look behind the scenes of ‘farm’ animal husbandry. In the upper grades, we report on our current investigations. The long transport routes to the Canary Islands lead to lively discussions, as do the pictures from Australian sheep markets and the fate of the animals on live-export ships. The teachers are also deeply moved by the topic and appreciate that we bring this issue into the school.
One highlight of the visit is the “Light the Sky” action with the animal welfare club. After classes, the club meets weekly to discuss topics related to animal welfare. Today, we are focusing on so-called ‘farm’ animals. The club members write wishes for the animals and light candles in the schoolyard in their memory.
We would like to thank the school in northern Saarland for welcoming us for the fifth time and for the warm reception. Project days are already being planned for the spring, and we are very much looking forward to them.
