Australia: Not Enough Space for the Animals at Muchea Saleyard

Cattle in Pens at Saleyard in Australia

We revisit the saleyard on the day before the sale. This is when cattle are delivered and drafted into the pens for overnight. There were pens holding cattle that caused concern for Animals’ Angels. We doubt each animal had “sufficient space to lie down and rest” which is what the animal welfare regulations require. We interpret this to mean that each animal could, if they wished, lay down at the same time to rest. However, opinions within industry say that the Regs don’t say ‘at the same time’ and the animals are held in what they say are selling pens not holding pens therefore the requirement for room is not applicable. There is a definite and urgent need to amend and clarify the regulation, so they reflect what was intended.
