Colombia: Animals' Angels Makes Animal Welfare Recommendations to the Government.

Sheep in Colombia

Ministry of Agriculture is currently developing animal welfare guidelines for 'farm animals'. Our colleague Diana has commented on the government's draft and made suggestions for additions and improvements.

Among other things, she demanded an increase in penalties for animal welfare violations and a more respectful use of language towards animals. The Colombian constitution states that animals are worthy of protection "on the basis of their intrinsic value and not on the basis of the benefits they bring to people". We refer to this and call on the government, among other things, to change the use of language in the animal welfare guidelines and not to speak of animals as "products".

The Ministry of Agriculture thanks us in a reply letter for our valuable input and promises to evaluate and discuss each of our points.
