Egypt: New study sheds light on knowledge and perception of animal welfare at the largest camel market in Egypt

New study on animal welfare at the largest camel market in Egypt

The Journal of Camelid Science, which belongs to ISOCARD (International Society of Camelid Research and Development), recently published the article “Knowledge and perception of animal welfare at the camel market in Egypt”. This research is a collaboration between camel expert Dr. Barbara Padalino from the University of Bologna, Italy, and Animals' Angels. The study was conducted at the camel market in Birqash, Egypt, from December 10, 2021 to September 1, 2022. The study examined how workers at Egypt's largest camel market understand the welfare of camels and how they handle the animals. It highlighted the significant role of the human factor in the health, behavior, and welfare of camels.
The study clearly shows that many caretakers at the market know how to recognize whether a camel is under stress, but there is a lack of general understanding of animal welfare concepts. It also emphasizes the importance of providing appropriate training and raising awareness of the specific needs of the animals among those who handle and work with camels.

Camels are amazing creatures that are of great importance to many people, especially in semi-arid and arid regions. However, their welfare has not been studied as extensively as that of other animals. We hope that this and other research studies can help to draw more attention to their welfare and well-being.
