Egypt: The calm before the storm

Camels on the market in Birqash

Today is a quiet day at the camel market in Birqash. No trading is taking place. The camels can recover from the strain of the long transport from Sudan to the north of Egypt. Finally, they can eat and drink in peace, finally they are free of their shackles and can move around. But the peace will only last a day. Most of the animals will be sold to slaughterhouses around Cairo tomorrow and the camels' suffering will reach its peak. Our team on the ground will not be able to do anything about this. They cannot stop the trade and the slaughter of the animals, but they are there to stand up for the dignity of the camels and to ensure that they are treated with respect.
