Meeting with German CVO

Animals‘ Angels attends a meeting with German CVO Dr Schwabenbauer at the Ministry for Agriculture in Bonn to discuss the urgent need for a revision of the EU regulation on the protection of animals during transport – as well as some other problems concerning animal transport.

EU-wide, Germany advocates to limit transport time and, together with Netherlands and Denmark, filed an application to the EU Commission for revising the transport regulation. Since then, other member states, e. g. Sweden, have joined the application. Animals’ Angels emphasizes the importance of this request and will do its best to have more member states join it.

During our talk with the CVO, we also discuss the problems in long distance transports of unweaned calves and those in live exports to Turkey – either transport issues that Germany is actively involved in. Animals’ Angels points towards the responsibility and scope of action of the Germans state veterinarians who dispatch both long distance transport of calves and live exports to Turkey. We demand that they at least have to comply with EU regulation.

Animals’ Angels is grateful for the conversation in which was also involved a federal ministry representative of the department for animal welfare. We hope that Germany – according to his joint declaration for animal welfare together with Denmark and Netherlands in 2014 – will take a leading role in the protection of animals during transport in the EU, take serious the existing problems and will be committed to put an end to them.
