NGOs call on Greece to adopt better rules for the protection of animals during transport

Greece: Event on live animal transport

We are very pleased to take part in an event organised by the Greek NGO “A Promise to Animals”, which aims to inform Greek citizens about the reality of live animal transport and to call for the support of the Greek government for animals in transport. One of our staff members is present at the event and is sharing our experiences in Greece.

For seven years, we have documented the conditions under which animals from all over Europe are transported to slaughterhouses or farms in Greece, as well as animals exported to Albania. In the latter case, transports often take a significant detour via Romania and Bulgaria, and through Greece, in order to reach Albania. This route appears to be chosen to avoid transit through certain non-EU countries, which may involve complex bureaucratic requirements or other obstacles. We emphasise our willingness to engage in dialogue with the Greek veterinary authorities in order to seek solutions to the problems we have documented for years.

Together with other organisations — A Promise to Animals, Animal Welfare Foundation, and Eyes on Animals — as well as a representative of the European Parliament, MEP Tilly Metz, we are calling on the Greek government to vote in favour of a new and improved regulation. Representatives of the Greek Ministry of Agriculture who were present reported on the progress of the ongoing discussions regarding the revision of the legislation.

We thank our Greek colleagues for the invitation and are convinced that uniting our organisations with engaged citizens is a source of strength.
