Poland: Inspection of Skaryszew Horse Market

The team of Viva! Interwencje, on behalf of Animals’ Angels, inspects the annual horse market in Skaryszew. This year, the infamous market was announced as being completely different than usual. ‚Slaughter’ horse traders were supposed to be excluded from the market and alcohol was to be banned.

However, as the team's observations prove, none of this is true. There are many trucks at the market, which are clearly slaughterhouse trucks, and even more market users than last year are drunk already at 9 in the morning.

The team observes many cases of reckless or violent handling of horses, like using whips on horses that are afraid of climbing up steep ramps. The markets last for almost 12 hours and during that time, the team observes no single case of watering the horses.

Part of the trade also takes place outside the market premise, where also birds and dogs are sold. The official personnel, including the police, does not intervene in the illegal sale, even though the sale of dogs at markets is banned by law.

Together with several other NGOs present at the market, the team will issue an official letter to the mayor of Skaryszew and to the county veterinarian in Radom demanding explanation of the obvious breaches of due regulations that have been observed at the market.
