Romania: Animal Trade at Calugareni Market Suspended

The veterinary authority of the region Giurgiu, South Romania, ordered the local administration to suspend the trade with animals at Calugareni animal market between 27 November 2017 and 10 January 2018. All vendors trying to access the weekly market to sell animals shall then be denied entrance. This way, the cruel trade and the killing of pigs taking place here every year before Christmas will be prevented.

Calugareni is a 300 years old market and we are aware how challenging it is to change the tradition of an entire village whose subsistence is based for a big part on the sale of the animals they raise at home. We consider the decision a positive sign and a little step forward. A lot more needs to be done.

Since 2006, Animals´ Angels has been documenting and reporting evidence of the barbaric treatment of animals at animal markets in Romania.
