Camel Markets
In many countries, camel markets are part of everyday life and usually take place on a weekly or daily basis. At these markets, 'slaughter', 'breeding' and 'racing' camels are sold or auctioned off. Depending on trading practices and local traditions, the animals remain at the markets for hours, days or even weeks.
What are the Animals Suffering From?
The stress for the camels begins with transportation to the market. Some of these journeys are very long. For example, the animals are transported from Somalia or Sudan to northern Egypt or from the south of Oman to Abu Dhabi. Once at the markets, the camels suffer above all from:
- Insufficient supply of water
- Lack of veterinary care in emergencies, illness or injury
- Lack of shade
- Cramped conditions in the pens
- Poor hygiene
- Untrained staff
- Brutal handling
What Animals' Angel Does Against it
Animals' Angels has been investigating camel markets in Qatar, Oman, the United Arab Emirates and Egypt since 2017. We document animal welfare problems and bring them to the attention of the relevant authorities.
