25.-26.10.2012 | Spain, Ceuta

Animals’ Angels and the Spanish animal welfare organisation ANDA are once again visiting the Spanish exclave Ceuta on the occasion of the Islamic Feast of Sacrifice.  Each year about 5.000 sheep and goats are killed by religious slaughter for this feast.  Most of the animals are killed by non-professionals.  During these acts of killing the animals have to live through enormous pain and harrowing fright.  The indifference of the people towards the suffering of the animals is also beyond comprehension.  The goat Marcus has his legs tied up and then has to lie on the concrete in the rain before the slaughtering.  The tight shackle has tied off the feet, Marcus is exhausted and apparently lost his consciousness.  Despite all these shortcomings, some little improvements are visible.  For example, in one slaughter tent the waiting animals are separated off by a divider and do not have to watch their dying fellows.  Although it is an extremely slow process, ANDA and Animals’ Angles will continue campaigning for improvements for the “sacrificial” animals of Ceuta.
