Australia: Visiting Benambra Saleyard

There are approximately 1200 young calves for sale. As with previous saleyards, we identify a number of animal welfare problems from the lack of water to poorly maintained infrastructure.  There is limited room to hold this number of cattle overnight at a density that allows space to lie down and rest, so in many pens cattle are standing all night without access to water. We observe a pen of cattle rushing to get a drink from a trough with very limited supply. There are many issues with this yard and our report to the operators and regulators will include all of them.
